Artist Statement
I paint snapshots of people or an object's personality and add a touch of humor and pathos. Through observation and photographs, I develop watercolor paintings that display the character of the subject. I have always found the world to be mysterious and unknowable. By giving the subjects a little humanity, the paintings open a small window into understanding my environment.
Often, I use small, generic human figures in compositions.
These gender neutral characters provide a storyline that reflects the viewers' personality, thoughts and memories, thus representing the viewers' perceptions of the scene in the painting. Therefore,
when one is interpreting the figures, one is looking at oneself.
